HOME GUARD MEMORIES AND INFORMATION - WARWICKSHIRE

THE BATTLE OF BIRMINGHAM:

EXERCISE OF 6/7th MARCH 1943

Over the weekend of 6th/7th March 1943 a massive exercise took place when Home Guard units from Staffordshire and Worcestershire attacked the city from the south and west. The defence was mounted by Birmingham's own battalions.

This is a contemporary description from the April 1943 issue of a magazine entitled "Defence the Home Guard Monthly”.

(On the same page there are details of organisational changes in the 8th Durham and of the results of a shooting competition. Also in the footnote there is brief mention of the hazards and frustrations involved in the type of exercise undertaken in Birmingham)

Acknowledgements:
We make grateful acknowledgement to Mick Ackrill for this information from his extensive private collection; and to the authors and publishers of this long-defunct publication, now untraceable but certainly not forgotten, for their contribution to the history of the Home Guard.
